Video Poker History

January 5th, 2011

The video poker machine is one of the most popular gambling machines in existence today. Part poker, and part video game, its the perfect combination to make it a modern day gambling sensation. Although todays video poker machines are the epitome of our current high tech in gambling, they have existed in simpler form for about two hundred years.

Video poker is of course based on the card game of poker. The video poker machine of today is the result of the game of poker being manifested into different types of games at varying levels of technology through the generations. The game of poker has been played in America since the early 1880s, with the game being referred to as Poker in 1834 by a man name Jonathan Green.

The earliest recorded ancestors of the video poker machine were coin operated machines which used poker cards. These machines came into the scene in the late 1800s, and were manufactured by a company by the name of Sittman and Pitt of Brooklyn. The poker card machines were placed in liquor stores and cigar shops, and shortly worked their way across the U.S.

These machines worked by the player putting a coin into the poker machine and pulling a handle, which spun five drums that held the poker cards. The player would wait for it to stop, while hoping for a winning hand. A winning hand was paid out in cigars or drinks. Sadly, and unbeknownst to the players, the Ten of Spades and the Jack of Hearts were left out of the deck to reduce the chances of winning.

In 1901, Charles Fey made the next big improvement to the poker machine by adding the first draw feature to the already wildly popular machine. Feys addition to the poker machine allowed the player to actually use their poker skills in the game, as opposed to being left to the mercy of blind luck.

Charles Feys improvement allowed the player to hold certain drums still after the first spin, while pulling the handle to spin the remaining drums. This in effect was the first hold and draw combination.

Over the following years, peoples interest in poker card machines diminished, with only an occasional hiccup of interest every now and again. It wasnt until the late 1970s that the poker machine was reborn into the video poker machine, thus rekindling the love of video poker.

The first of these machines appeared along side of the personal computer. It was this technology which made the video poker machine a reality. With its solid state circuitry, and its television like monitor, this clunky machine would give rise to the poker machines of today. These machines have made their homes in bars, casinos and even online.

The new Badugi Poker

October 13th, 2010

Badugi is a poker variant that has grown increasingly popular during the last few years. It originates from Asia, but has not spread to the rest of the world until recently. It is today played online as well as offline by poker enthusiasts all over the world. Learning Badugi is very easy if you already master other poker games, such as Holdem Poker.

Badugi is a four card game with three draws. The players with the lowest hand will win the pot. Unlike other poke variants, getting one pair, two pairs, three of a kind or four of a kind is undesirable in Badugi. Getting two or more cards from the same suit is also bad. The best hand is therefore containing cards from four different suits, and no cards should have the same rank. Such a hand where all the cards are of different suit and rank is called a Badugi!

When playing Badugi, you will be dealt four cards. The first card will be dealt to the player on the small blind, and the dealing will then proceed clockwise. Only one card is dealt to each player at a time. The betting will depend on which type of Badugi you are playing. There exist three different variants: Limit Badugi, Pot Limit Badugi and Half Pot Limit Badugi.

In Limit Badugi, all the bets are made in incremental units. During the first and second round, each player is allowed to bet the lower level bet. If you for instance play 4 8 Badugi, you will be allowed to bet 4 during the first and second round. During the third and fourth round, you can be the higher level, i.e. 8. Just as in the other Limit Poker variants, betting will be capped at four bets per round in Limit Badugi.

In Pot Limit Badugi, bets are not made in incremental units. You can instead raise your bet any amount as long as you bet no lower than the minimum bet and no higher than the amount of money currently found in the pot. The minimum bet is determined by the big blind. Lets say that the small blind is 4 and the big blind 8. One caller has already bet 8. The next player can then choose to bet as low as 8. The total value of the current pot is 4 +8 + 8. The player can therefore also choose to bet 4 +8 + 8 + 8, since the maximum bet is based on the current pot on top of the initial call. The maximum bet in this situation is therefore 28.

Half Pot Limit Badugi is very similar to Pot Limit Badugi, but a player is only allowed to raise the value of half the current pot. Lets say the pot contains 2 + 4 + 4. Half of 2 + 4 + 4+ 4 is 7. The next player can therefore raise 7+ 4 = 11. The lowest allowed bet is determined by the big blind, just as in Pot Limit Badugi.

The History Of Poker

September 29th, 2010

Poker is a card game with many theories about its history and many debates about its origins. Poker may have been around for more than ten centuries in the form of other card games. It is believed that the word ‘poker’ was derived from an underworld slang word ‘poke’ – this was a term used for pickpockets. When card-sharks cheated somebody out of their money they boasted about having ‘poked’ that person. An ‘r’ was added to the term ‘poke’ so that the sharks could refer to what they were doing in front of their victims, who would be none the wiser!

While there seems to be no clear ancestor to the game, for the United States at least, Poker has a definite history. Poker began in New Orleans when the French settlers introduced poque in the 18th century. This was a card game which involved betting and bluffing and there are many game historians who believe that this is where poker originates. There have been many modifications to the game, including ’stud poker’, the ‘draw’ and the ’straight’ which became popular during the Civil War. Slowly ‘poker’, as the game became known, spread to other states via steamboats, wagons and trains.

Poker initially began with a deck of 20 cards, and eventually evolved into a deck of 32 cards. During the 1830s a 52 card deck became the norm. In 1875 the joker was introduced as a wild card. At the end of the Civil War poker reached the towns of the Old West. It wasn’t long before they realized that easy money could be made from playing (or perhaps cheating at) poker. Legends were created involving the potent mixture of saloons, poker and guns. Brave gamblers in the old west towns of Dodge City and Deadwood could be found taking their chances with their backs to the walls and their guns at the ready.

By the end of the 19th century, gambling and poker had spread throughout both the United States and the world. American states and cities began to see an opportunity for raising money. They taxed the gambling dens to raise money for their communities.

Nowadays casinos have taken over from the saloons and the game is strictly regulated by gambling laws. It is played more than any other card game in the world and has even become a sporting event, offering very rich pickings for the serious player. Finally, there is no doubt that poker has a rich and interesting history.

One of the Poker variations that has evolved and has garnered strong following is Let Them Ride Poker. The game, which is loosely based on the popular card game, was developed by the Shuffle Master Gaming Company. The purpose was to increase the sales of their automatic shuffling machines to land-based casinos. It first debuted in Reno, Nevada in 1993.

Let It Ride Poker is based on the Five-Card Stud Poker Game, which gives casino guests the chance to control two out of three bets wagered on an actual Poker game. Players have the option to pull out their bets if they dont like the way their hand develops or let it ride, as the name of the game indicates, if they want to proceed. Let It Ride Poker is comparable to games like Video Poker, Pai Gow Poker and Caribbean Stud Poker, which are new breeds of games based on the classic game of Poker. However, unlike the usual game, Let It Ride Poker is a single-player game, in the sense that the player competes against the machine and not the banker or other Poker players.

To date, Let It Ride Poker has flourished to become a very interesting and competitive game with a strong following. And why not, when it is patterned after one of the most successful card games of all time?

The game tests a players intellect and strategy. While luck can win the player a round or two, it is no match to wits and a sheer knack for the game. Let It Ride Poker is a thinking game each move should be well thought-out before it is enacted. Otherwise, it could make or break the whole game. This is the goal of Let It Ride Poker to add spice and sizzle to an already electrifying game.
