The History Of Poker

September 29th, 2010

Poker is a card game with many theories about its history and many debates about its origins. Poker may have been around for more than ten centuries in the form of other card games. It is believed that the word ‘poker’ was derived from an underworld slang word ‘poke’ – this was a term used for pickpockets. When card-sharks cheated somebody out of their money they boasted about having ‘poked’ that person. An ‘r’ was added to the term ‘poke’ so that the sharks could refer to what they were doing in front of their victims, who would be none the wiser!

While there seems to be no clear ancestor to the game, for the United States at least, Poker has a definite history. Poker began in New Orleans when the French settlers introduced poque in the 18th century. This was a card game which involved betting and bluffing and there are many game historians who believe that this is where poker originates. There have been many modifications to the game, including ’stud poker’, the ‘draw’ and the ’straight’ which became popular during the Civil War. Slowly ‘poker’, as the game became known, spread to other states via steamboats, wagons and trains.

Poker initially began with a deck of 20 cards, and eventually evolved into a deck of 32 cards. During the 1830s a 52 card deck became the norm. In 1875 the joker was introduced as a wild card. At the end of the Civil War poker reached the towns of the Old West. It wasn’t long before they realized that easy money could be made from playing (or perhaps cheating at) poker. Legends were created involving the potent mixture of saloons, poker and guns. Brave gamblers in the old west towns of Dodge City and Deadwood could be found taking their chances with their backs to the walls and their guns at the ready.

By the end of the 19th century, gambling and poker had spread throughout both the United States and the world. American states and cities began to see an opportunity for raising money. They taxed the gambling dens to raise money for their communities.

Nowadays casinos have taken over from the saloons and the game is strictly regulated by gambling laws. It is played more than any other card game in the world and has even become a sporting event, offering very rich pickings for the serious player. Finally, there is no doubt that poker has a rich and interesting history.

The History Of Omaha Poker

September 22nd, 2010

Pokers inception dates back to the first or second decade of the 19th Century. It has been said that it was in the former French territory of New Orleans that the game of Poker first appeared. The gambling saloon and the notorious floating saloons on the banks of the Mississippi River have been referred to as its place of birth. The game of Poker began to attract people as early as 1811.

Many surmise that the game of Poker had been made famous in the Mississippi riverboats. The first Poker games involved a deck of 20 cards composed of aces, kings, queens, jacks and tens. During that time, the players would bet on which hand was the most valuable. In 1829, it was Joseph Crowell who was the first to refer to this game, but it was Jonathan Green, in his book An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling (1843), that first called the game Poker.

The movement of time and the ingenuity of players have both paved way to variants in the field of card games. Poker has developed many variations, including Texas Holdem, Ohama Poker, Pai Gow Poker and 5 Card Draw, among the many other Poker games. The variations in the different Poker games result from the continuous invention of the players to satisfy either their curiosity or desire to win.

Poker is considered a game of skill and talent. It is very unlikely for new players to join the roster of skilled players to compete in a Poker game. Similar to other card games, the basic tenet in winning is to do research in order to prepare for the tournament. Researching, browsing over and learning the Poker rules and strategies become a basic rule for survival in every Poker game.

Ohama Poker is one of the more popular versions of a Poker game played in many casinos and Poker tournaments. Though Texas Holdem is considered the reigning master of Poker tournaments, Ohama plays the second best in attracting a large amount of people in card games. The reason for drawing a relatively large amount of card enthusiasts is that Ohama Poker is very similar to Texas Holdem. The main difference, which many Poker players consider as a better deal, is that in Ohama Poker a player can choose out of nine cards.

Omaha is also frequently played as a high-low split game, which means that the best hand and the lowest hand split the pot among themselves. There are certain factions that call Omaha Poker High-Low Split or 8-Or-Better. This is one of the things that makes the game visibly attractive to many card players.

Ohama enjoys the prestige of being one of the most famous card games in Poker tournaments. The once humble beginnings of a Poker game in the Mississippi Rivers have been converted into a game of international fame. The good thing is, this is just the start. It will continuously attract people who are enthusiastic about learning different card games.

The History Of Let It Ride Poker

September 15th, 2010

Of all the card games being played today, it is undeniable that Poker is one of the most popular, as well as being one of the most famous. People get attracted to the sheer excitement of the game, the thrill of putting one over another player and of course, the big winnings that go along with it.

Because of its popularity, Poker has been adapted into a number of versions and has been regarded as an international card game. It has since evolved from being a simple household or neighborhood game into a professional, high-stakes competition that attracts aficionados from all over the world.

One of the Poker variations that has evolved and has garnered strong following is Let Them Ride Poker. The game, which is loosely based on the popular card game, was developed by the Shuffle Master Gaming Company. The purpose was to increase the sales of their automatic shuffling machines to land-based casinos. It first debuted in Reno, Nevada in 1993.

Let It Ride Poker is based on the Five-Card Stud Poker Game, which gives casino guests the chance to control two out of three bets wagered on an actual Poker game. Players have the option to pull out their bets if they dont like the way their hand develops or let it ride, as the name of the game indicates, if they want to proceed. Let It Ride Poker is comparable to games like Video Poker, Pai Gow Poker and Caribbean Stud Poker, which are new breeds of games based on the classic game of Poker. However, unlike the usual game, Let It Ride Poker is a single-player game, in the sense that the player competes against the machine and not the banker or other Poker players.

To date, Let It Ride Poker has flourished to become a very interesting and competitive game with a strong following. And why not, when it is patterned after one of the most successful card games of all time?

The game tests a players intellect and strategy. While luck can win the player a round or two, it is no match to wits and a sheer knack for the game. Let It Ride Poker is a thinking game each move should be well thought-out before it is enacted. Otherwise, it could make or break the whole game. This is the goal of Let It Ride Poker to add spice and sizzle to an already electrifying game.

The First Five Crucial Poker Minutes!!

September 8th, 2010

First things first, determine exactly what everyones trying to accomplish. Is the individual there to learn, have fun or play for a living? Most of your profit in no limit holdem games is going to come from picking a target and going after him. A lesson taken from the movie Rounders: “If you can’t spot the sucker within the first half hour, then you are sucker.”

Figure out who is winning and who is losing. People usually dont play as well when they are losing, therefore a losing player may be an easier target. In no limit, you have to learn and understand people you play against. The strategy you used yesterday could be worthless today. You need to know what kind of game plan you are going to use and know the game plan you will be using will be the right one.

Another individual you should target are players who are excessively drinking. Pick on the drunk guy whos just there to have a good time and gamble. You may get a few bad beats from time to time with drunks because of there willingness to take chances more often, but in the long run theyll pay you off nicely.

In the first five minutes, try to establish a dominating presence at the table. You dont want to be someone elses mark. If no one are the table knows you, they might mark you as a fish and try to bully you around. No limits no fun when you have people targeting you. Reek of confidence; sit up straight and let them know how comfortable you are. Be intimidating let them know youre a well-rounded no limit holdem player and youre ready for any play they throw at you.

Last, but not least important point, is to pay attention. If you pay attention constantly after you fold, you will pick up on certain tells and players betting patterns. Players will show information you can use against them.

The Female of the Species is More Deadlier than the

The Female of the Species is More Deadlier than the Male:The new internet poker player

Never underestimate the power of the pink pound; no not the spending power of our gay community but the women whose ever increasing disposable income is now becoming a seriously lucrative courtship with many online gambling sites.

With greater autonomy in their personal lives and fewer women being tied down with the responsibility of marriage and children, their spending power has escalated at a rate that not only keeps those shop tills ringing but has also given women the freedom to spend as they wish. With online gambling now a mainstream activity, the trend has also seen more women taking the lead in online poker playing. We only need to see the rising number of gambling sites catering exclusively to women to know that this is the market to be in.

Until very recently, the online poker boom was thought to be a male dominated arena with less than 10% of players at a typical casino poker game being women. But online gambling industry experts have recently set out to investigate internet poker trends that have led to the widespread increase of online poker websites. Two studies conducted in the US brought out interesting and unexpected revelations in terms of demographics and the overall popularity and appeal of online poker.

Surprisingly, the studies, one conducted by PC Data Spotlight on Games, show that over one third of online poker players are female with women being the fastest growing segment of the online poker playing public. The studies also revealed that an overwhelming majority of female poker players prefer to play at online poker sites. In fact, only 1 of every 6 women preferred online poker to regular poker!

As betting matures online, a large part of it will take place around casual games which just happen to be popular with women players. In fact, despite the assumed male dominance of online gambling, women do make up a significant share. Current figures show that this is approaching around 47% of all internet users being female.

Online gambling providers therefore need to take serious note of women players if they are to maximise the overall package and in turn increase the value and loyalty of these players. It would seem that although men are currently ahead of their female counterparts in online gambling, women gamers are rapidly creeping up the stakes to become one of the most powerful demographics to woo and within a few years, they will become the smartest group to bet on.
